Primal (PS2 Classic) | Walkthrough (No Commentary) | [#1] Solum

Primal, a long-forgotten 2003 production from the now defunct Sony Cambridge (of MediEvil fame), is the definition of a hidden gem. I downloaded it on a whim from PSNow after being intrigued by a snippet of game footage, and it quickly became one of my most memorable gaming experiences. The game is more or less story-based, so my fondness for it probably sounds strange, given my stated preference for gameplay above all else. Perhaps more surprisingly, the story isn't the main attraction for me; I can take or leave it, and I'd have loved Primal even with a completely different narrative. Why so? What cements this game for me as an all-time classic are two things: first, the naive grandiosity of its ambition; and second, the characters - specifically, our main protagonists, Jen and Scree, brought to life by two of the finest VA performances ever to grace a video game. Hudson Leick (pronounced "Like"), known for her villainous role in the show Xena: Warrior Princess, is so good as Jen that it feels unfairly denigrating to note that the performance of the late great Andreas Katsulas (the one-armed man in The Fugitive; G'Kar from Babylon 5) as Scree is better still. Indeed, Katsulas is so good I'd be hard-pressed to name a better VA performance in any game before or after. If Primal were more well known, Katsulas's work as Scree would be considered legendary. So it's actually the lightning-in-a-bottle quality of getting this odd couple of Leick and Katsulas together - their remarkable chemistry, their warm-hearted banter - that makes Primal, for me, an unforgettable experience. I simply adore these characters. I want to listen to them talk. I enjoy hanging out with them. Primal, in short, makes me smile. And that's no small thing. I went back and forth for a while on whether to do commentary for this series, ultimately deciding against it because, in my view, appreciating Primal requires putting Jen and Scree front-and-center. The sheer number and length of the cutscenes is more than enough to allow the videos to stand on their own, sans commentary. On the other hand, I should note that Primal's cinematic style foreshadowed a direction for Sony games - and for video games more generally - which I find disagreeable. Still, Primal cannot be blamed for the sins of its successors. It stands firmly on its own. Upon release, it fell victim to its own hype, its fat budget, its hubristic claims about rivaling and unseating Tomb Raider, receiving overall harsh reviews for its failure to match its revolutionary cinematic qualities with equally revolutionary gameplay. I sometimes think of it as the "Waterworld" of video games. With the benefit of seventeen years of cooling off, however, it's easier for us to appreciate the game's considerable virtues. The worlds are gorgeous. The sense of adventure is compelling. And the voice acting, as noted, is out-of-this-world. Take it for what it is and enjoy the ride. With respect to this walkthrough in particular, I opted to adapt some techniques from a few speedrunners - SefiroCrescent and THE ENGLISHMAN - in the first two worlds, and to edit out a lot of the combat and rope/wall climbing (taking a cue from BunnyBoiler72's excellent walkthrough). The reason for both of these decisions is the same: the combat is monotonous and often tedious. The enemies love nothing more than blocking, and 99% of the time there's no reason to engage them. Therefore, like a speedrunner on a mission, I run past them whenever I can. When I can't, I give the flavor of the combat and then cut to the kill shot. All you're doing when you fight in this game, in any case, is mashing the shoulder buttons with varying degrees of pressure. Skill is basically irrelevant. I make an effort to obtain more than enough lodestones to get any first-time player through the game without hassle. Furthermore, I use one glitch in Aquis because it saves five stones and illustrates pretty well just how buggy this notoriously buggy game can be. Speaking of which: the game performed like char-broiled crap on my PS4. Most notably, the incessant stuttering was out of control. I would estimate the game stuttered once every two minutes, so in videos with an average length of two hours we're talking about sixty stutters I had to edit out in post-production to get something like smooth gameplay up onscreen. Hence why it took me so long to release this series. Be sure to check out these links to the best Primal videos on YouTube: 1.
