This video shows new teacher Melina Lozano in her first attempt to teach using concepts from the NGSS with her elementary students. She begins engaging her students in three-dimensional learning, which means that students will use disciplinary core ideas, scientific and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts to make sense of phenomena they experience in their environment. This video showcases her first week of lessons, which focus on modeling and sense making. Melina also draws connections with the students’ language and culture. You will see students participating in collaborative conversations as they explain and predict how rain interacts with the land. They explore the core science ideas of erosion and water flow and the crosscutting concept of cause and effect. This video is 1 of 4 that introduces elementary science educators to important strategies based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The class featured in the videos is made up of second- and third-grade bilingual students. This collection of videos demonstrates new instructional strategies in the elementary school classroom. The project was led by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) with funding from Disney.
