Armed with gas masks and headlamps, I trek into the darkness to witness the rare and haunting blue flames — a natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulphuric gas. As the sun rises, it reveals the surreal Kawah Ijen, home to the largest acidic crater lake in the world, glowing an eerie turquoise. This is East Java like you’ve never seen it.
