Botox is the muscle relaxing miracle that was the first of its kind to be available in North America used mainly as a wrinkle treatment to smooth away fine lines and furrows that can appear on the forehead, in between the eyebrows and around the corners of the eyes. Botox had no competition for several years, but recently 2 products that were popular in Europe broke in to the Canadian and US markets and have brought some additional benefits. Dysport and Xeomin are both neuromodulators derived from botulinum toxin Type A. They too are safe and effective muscle relaxants. Currently, Botox is distributed by Allergan, Dysport by Galderma and Xeomin by Merz Pharma. One of the benefits of Dysport that makes it stand out from Xeomin and Botox is that it has a faster onset. This means that instead of waiting 4-6 days post-treatment to see the results, individuals may start seeing the results as quickly as 24 hours post- injection. Xeomin can boast that it has absolutely no additives, but it has less proteins around each active molecule as well. However, some physicians have found that this has resulted in Xeomin having less ‘staying power’ than Dysport or Botox.
