Public libraries, the kind that traditionally lend books, are the main point of reference for most people to understand Libraries of Things. So why are these related forms of social infrastructure still so separate? Public book-lending library systems increasingly offer other objects, and independent LoTs are beginning to collaborate with public book-lending libraries. Look no further than the longest-running tool library in the U.S., which is part of the Public Library system in Berkeley, California! This chapter, “Lend everything,” focuses on how to approach creating a lending ecosystem in your community. The videos in this series were recorded during Shareable's Library of Things Co-Lab—between March and May 2024 and have been edited into chapters. Be sure to check out https://www.shareable.net/library-of-... for a comprehensive written digital toolkit, full-color PDF, and printer-friendly version with resources and templates for each section. While these videos were designed to supplement the written material they are comprehensive and cover what you need to know to create a LoT in your community! The full list of videos can be accessed in this playlist: • Library of Things Toolkit This is a project of Shareable, a 501c3 nonprofit organization distributed across the U.S. Shareable collaborates with organizers and allies to imagine, resource, network, and scale cooperative projects.
