John Walker is not a villain. John Walker proved Dr. Erksine correct in choosing Steve Rogers as his test subject. Patriotic and committed to serving the United States government, John Walker is realization of the model soldier being turned into a Super Soldier. Steve Rogers upheld the ideals of truth and freedom and those were at his core of who he was. John Walker is not Captain America. He desperately wanted to walk in Rogers' shoes, but was unable to maintain Rogers' lofty beliefs and expectations because they are not a part of him. John Walker was a good soldier, but those qualities alone would not make him a good Captain America. But John sees the shield as means to his own redemption, a way to make up for feelings of inadequacy in order to properly ascend to be the kind of man that he wants to be. Steve Rogers is the ideal, John Walker is the reality; merely a man with all of the flaws and blemishes that implies. I really like John Walker from the comics. He was a concept that made so much sense: the U.S. Government's version of Captain America. They went and found a Captain America who had qualities that they felt would be an improvement on the original model ("follows orders"). John Walker wanted to be Captain America in the worst way and for the best of reasons. He was a good soldier and a loyal patriot; he wanted to be a great hero. But John Walker could never be Captain America; he was never going to be able to live up to the impossible standard that Steve Rogers set. Oh, and the "John Cena" bit? Just something I have long thought would've been great for Marvel. Cena's military'esque gimmick on WWE programming so totally embodied US Agent: "It is a face hewn to heroic proportions; proud, true, rock hard. And yet, perhaps those proportions are a trifle too much in the idealized mold. The jaw is perhaps a fraction too square, the iron sinewed neck a bit too thick. And, in the fervor, the fierce pride of place and patriotism which burns in the piercing eyes, might we not detect a hint of...madness?" music: Denis Leary "Asshole" #thefalconandthewintersoldier #tfatws #usagent
