Located along the eastern stretch of coast of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of Sandown. During the 1540s, Henry VIII ordered the construction of a castle at Sandown to protect against invasions from France. The French attacked, nevertheless, before the castle was completed. Their advance stalled, and construction was resumed after their departure. Coastal erosion caused the castle to deteriorate, leading ultimately to its demolition in 1631. A subsequent defensive structure was built with materials salvaged from the castle. This became Sandham Fort, also known as Sandown Fort or Diamond Fort. By 1781 it housed a garrison, including a master gunner and over twenty soldiers. The fort, too, was ultimately demolished, in its case in the mid-19th century. In 1864 the railway arrived in Sandown after the Isle of Wight Railway extended south from Ryde. This effectively marked the beginning of the town's transformation as a seaside resort as it became more accessible to Victorian holidaymakers seeking to 'take the waters'. During the 1870s, Sandown Pier was constructed. When it was opened in 1878, it measured 360 feet (110 metres) long.
