Recently joined a trip from Kyoto to 2 tour sites in the northern coastal area of Kyoto. A 10.5 hour trip. Reasons (benefits) for joining: 1. cost is about the same as the transportation had I DIY 2. no worry about getting lost or missing trains since I do not speak Japanese 3. the 2 sites are about 40 minutes by bus apart so make sense to do together. Disadvantages: 1. move on the group's schedule (tight!) 2. wait time for whole group to get on the bus Would I still do it in hind sight - YES! What would I have done differently - bring food in case the sight seeing takes longer than expected. Better to skip lunch than to skip the scenery. There are line up in the restaurants. If you are travelling with kids, there are many play area up on the mountain. Good but may need to convince them to leave! Weather was great for my trip (January). Warmer than my home town and no rain!
