Rantisi's car was hit by two Israeli missiles on Saturday evening, about a block from his house in the Sheik Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City. The Hamas leader was rushed to hospital and into emergency surgery, but he died five minutes after arriving. Two of his guards were also killed, hospital officials said, and five pedestrians were injured. Soon after the attack, angry protesters gathered outside the Gaza hospital where Rantisi had been taken. The large crowds chanted loudly and demonstrated their outrage at the Israeli air strike. Ahmed Bahar, a Hamas leader, said he didn't want to talk about a response to the killing, adding the group's actions would do the talking. Islamic Jihad leader Khaled al-Batish said US President George W Bush was partly to blame for the assassination. He suggested Bush had given approval to Israeli Prime Minister Aerial Sharon to act as he wanted, when the two met last week. At the meeting in Washington, Bush endorsed Sharon's plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and a small section of the West Bank. But he angered many Palestinians by saying Israel should keep some large settlement blocs and not have to absorb Palestinian refugees under any peace deal. Thousands of angry Palestinians also marched through the streets of Gaza City following the assassination, shouting, "revenge, revenge". Ismail Haniyeh, a Hamas leader and one of Rantisi's possible successors, said the killing would strengthen resistance and Hamas power.
