It’s a full circle moment in Duluth Harbor as Erie Trader/Clyde S VanEnkevort, the same vessel which started the shipping season as the first under the Lift Bridge back in March now closes it off, taking the last load out the harbor before it shuts down for the winter. John J Boland and Lee A Tregurtha are still expected to arrive for their layups so we’re not completely done quite yet, but the last load of ore is sent! Unlike last year’s finish, which saw American Mariner push her departure until the last possible second and then get stuck in the ice, delaying the lock’s closure by over 3 hours, the ships are giving the deadline a decent margin this season due to the regular storms we’ve been getting. The ship faced a fierce crosswind on her way out, one of the more difficult conditions for the ships to deal with even if it’s not as visibly spectacular as a headwind pushing waves into the bow. Her thrusters and engine could be heard fighting to keep her lined up in the Canal the whole way out! That same wind brought very unusual January rain, which promptly froze upon hitting the ground, creating an icy nightmare that turned every hard surface in the city into a skating rink. Let’s just say it was a very rough day to drive school bus, even the walk to the bridge felt rather risky, penguin waddling down the path and holding the side of the bridge and the Canal rail. She did not audibly salute on her way out, but it’s entirely possible the ice and wind are the cause of that, clogging up the horn. The day before her sister ship Joyce L VanEnkevort only cleared up her horns after sailing past the lighthouses, well onto the Lake for that reason, so it’s very possible! Built in 2012, Erie Trader/Clyde S VanEnkevort is an ATB type laker, measuring 845ft long in her normal configuration with a capacity of over 39,000 tons. The tug and barge sections rarely seperate, and she is designed to operate as a single vessel, only detaching the tug for a few situations, such as ice breaking if they get stuck, refueling while the barge is loading or unloading, or maintenance. The ship was constructed for the VanEnkevort fleet as their second ship, a sister ship for the Great Lakes Trader/Joyce L VanEnkevort, built over a decade prior, and the first large vessel to be constructed 100% on the Great Lakes since 1985. During construction however, financial and contract difficulties lead her to be leased out to the American Steamship Company for the first five years of her career under the name Lakes Contender/Ken Booth Sr. At the beginning of 2017 she was transferred to VanEnkevort as planned and renamed to her intended registry, although she kept the black ASC paint scheme for another 5 years until 2023. Despite being among the largest and busiest haulers on the Lakes with versatile capabilities, she is a relatively obscure vessel overall, usually coming and going with little fanfare. This season has brought her some more attention than usual however, being the first ship through both the Soo Locks and the Duluth Canal in the 2025 season, and now the last out! Hope you enjoy! Hopefully can catch both the Boland and Lee Tregurtha but we’ll see. If not, I did catch Oberstar and Burns Harbor going into layup, so we’ll see how this plays out for the end of the season!
