I always say, "The more steps you take, the more mistakes you're likely to make!" I'm not the only one who has forgotten or added a zero or other digit to the problem and it changed my answer completely (either a really big number or a really small decimal). When you compute more complicated problems like weight-based IV drips, heparin infusion, and even some pediatric calculations, the numbers produced can be quite large, requiring you to correctly interpret and write down the numbers in order to perform calculations in the calculator. The calculator trick helps to eliminate the extra step of writing down your computations on paper, thus reducing error with leaving off a digit when writing down or re-entering the numbers into the calculator. It also it a time-saver when you have to complete exams under the stress of time. Steps: -Enter all of the numbers along the top of your equation by entering the multiplication function in between each number. -Once you've entered all of the numbers (I don't inlcude the '1s' because they don't make a difference, if you would like to enter the ones, this would be ok) key in "/" divide. -Enter all numbers across the bottom and once finished, key the equal sign=. -Congratulations, you've just performed the calculator trick. You can use this trick from simple metric conversions to the most complicated IV drip problem. You can also use this method with desired over have.
