My guest in this episode of Talking to Thinkers is the philosopher James Conant, Chester D.Tripp Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago and Humboldt Professor at the University of Leipzig. In the first half of this episode Professor Conant talks about how he became a philosopher, what he thinks philosophy is and how he pursues it. The conversation ends with a discussion of the various ways in which he approaches writing about philosophy and philosophers. The second part of this episode begins with Conant's musings on various ways of interpreting philosophers, including his own preferred approach which he calls 'a resolute reading', and then moves onto an exploration of several philosophers who have influenced him over his career, including Kant, Wittgenstein, Putnam, Stroud and Rorty before concluding with a brief retrospective and prospective consideration of Conant's philosophical career.
