The Stop-and-Wait ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) protocol ensures reliable data transmission by sending one packet at a time and waiting for an acknowledgment (ACK) before sending the next packet. After transmitting a packet, the sender stops and waits for the receiver’s acknowledgment. If the ACK is received within a specified timeout period, the sender proceeds to send the next packet. If the ACK is not received (due to loss or corruption of the packet or ACK), the sender retransmits the same packet. This process continues until each packet is successfully delivered and acknowledged. While simple and reliable, Stop-and-Wait ARQ can be inefficient in high-latency networks due to its limited use of available bandwidth.
