This Book Broke My Mom Heart | Grief and Loss in Son of a Witch

Son of A Witch is the follow up to Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire. This book follows Liir, the son of Elphaba (the alleged Wicked Witch of the West) on his coming of age journey after losing his mother at the hands of the "Wonderful" Wizard of Oz. In this video essay, I explore loss, grief, identity and what happens when systems fail the most vulnerable among us. Through Liir's search for self -identity and belonging, we explore themes such as: purity culture, prison reform, colonialism and what it means to grow up without answers to your past and, ultimately, your future. We will also learn why you should never tell a pregnant person their suffering is less than someone else's.... even if the someone else is a dying Elephant.
