A karaoke/instrumental backing track of "Molasses to Rum" from the musical 1776, music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, book by Peter Stone. Peter H. Hunt directed the original production, which starred William Daniels, Virginia Vestoff, Howard Da Silva, Ken Howard, and Paul Hecht. The music was orchestrated by Eddie Sauter. This track includes an additional horn passage that plays underneath the "auctioneer" section of the song, as heard in the 1972 film version. This was included in part to make more structural sense of a vamp-heavy section for anyone using the tracks. The upload pattern of these videos was decided a few months ago, and it was not intentionally planned for this particular upload to fall on the weekend of Juneteenth. I feel this coincidence is rather fortuitous, as it does us well to remember as we celebrate the end of chattel slavery in this country, the means by which this "stinking business" was brought into this country. When it premiered, 1776 was a brave show to take a stance, in the aftermath of the civil rights movement, and take our history to task for ever having held the "filthy purse-strings" of taking human beings and treating them as property. It is vital that we not lose that bravery now and in the years to come. That we take similar stances against the forms of slavery that still exist today in our prisons, and the oppression enacted against minority citizens by those ostensibly sworn to protect them. Black lives matter. It was wrong of our founders to not have recognized that, and we do a grave injustice to continue that wrong today. I encourage everyone to take the time to donate where you can, contact your legislators, stand with those in protest, and do our part to make this world a better place.
