As we head into summer, the Norfolk Island Hibiscus (Lagunaria patersonia) is a coastal beauty in its element! This striking flowering tree occurs naturally on just two small islands off Australia’s east coast: Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. Its remarkable tolerance for salt spray and sandy soils has made it a favourite street and park tree across many coastal towns, including around Sydney Harbour. Its star-shaped blooms often steal the spotlight, with pink-to-mauve petals that slowly fade to white. But its distinctive brown seed capsules are just as famous: inside sit glossy black seeds wrapped in fine white fibres that can irritate the skin, earning it nicknames like “cow itch tree” or simply “the itch.” It's graceful yet tough... Perhaps a little how you're feeling as we approach the end of the year? Plan your visit to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney to see it in flower: https://bit.ly/3HFYoqw
