The M WOODS collection features numerous works by Paul McCarthy. Here we look at The Sound of Music, created by the artist in 2008, reappropriating the blockbuster film of the same title, which was originally made in 1965. The original film is one of the most successful in history, widely known and beloved across the world. For many Chinese people born in the 80s, The Sound of Music provided first and lasting impressions of the West. Songs from the movie were even taught in some schools as an introduction to learning English. In McCarthy' work The Sound of Music, the artist projects the original film upside down and backwards, deconstructing the nostalgia and familiarity that many feel for the story, disorienting the viewer, and bringing attention to the potential of darker and more sinister themes to exist in the film.
