(11 Oct 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic tried to boost his image on Monday by reopening a bridge on the main Belgrade-Nis highway which was destroyed during NATO bombing. Milosevic also reopened a railway station in Leskovac, one of the towns hit hardest in NATO air raids. Milosevic expressed his condolences to the families of those killed during the NATO bombings and announced he would try to rebuild the country by winter. Reopening a railway station in Leskovac, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) southeast of Belgrade, Yugoslav President Milosevic told some 5-thousand of his supporters that only his government could take the country forward. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "I wish to express my condolences to the families of all the people killed during the bombing in this region. I want peace for every citizen in Serbia and Montenegro. I want the reconstruction of our country to be rapid and in time for winter. I would like the Montenegrin people to decide for themselves what their way is going to be. The whole world knows that our country is a part of the world community and we are doing everything to remain a part of that community." SUPER CAPTION: Slobodan Milosevic, Yugoslav President Milosevic warned the crowds they should not be deceived by the opposition's bid to reconstruct the country. However, the Yugoslav leader did concede his country is going through a deep economic and social crisis. Earlier on, Milosevic reopened a bridge in Mijatovac which was destroyed during the NATO bombings. During the inauguration ceremony, the Yugoslav President expressed his condolences to the families of the people killed during the NATO airstrikes.
