The Western Wall Remembers Music by Issachar Miron The name of this unique "Artist's Edition" recording draws its inspiration from a thought by Leonard Bernstein, one of the greatest contemporary conductors, who writes regarding Giora Feidman: "Long live Giora, his clarinet and his Soul Music! He bridges many gaps - generational, cultural and social, and he does it with consummate artistry." "Giora" as Maestro Feidman is known in Israel and abroad, made the revival of Jewish music the goal of his life. He took an ancient art of the Klezmer, an unschooled, Eastern European Jewish musician, from the folklore plateau of amateurism and elevated it to artistic heights, amazingly sophisticated, profound in style and virtuosic eclat. His tone production and performing insight according to the leading musicologist and music critics of our day, are "inimitable". The art of Giora Feidman, a principal (Bass Clarinet) of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, nourishes itself from the treasures of the Jewish folklore on a number of parallel strata. On one level, Giora reviver and brings to his listeners ancient melodies of weakness and strength, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. On another level, as other great performers-innovators, he is in a perpetual process of searching for genuine Jewish music for the clarinet and his style. Giora encourages and commissions Israeli composers to writhe in the style of the "Klezmer" as he calls the Jewish Soul Music of which he is at the time being the lonely pioneer. In his work Giora Feidman came across the record I REMEMBER by Issachar Miron (MHS 3232) on which Tsipora Miron, the composer´s wife and Jasha Silberstein, the principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera of New York Ciry, have presented SIX POEMS FOR CELLO AND PIANO. He immediately felt deeply affined to Issachar Miron's music, got in touch with him and the get-together of these two exceptional artists, the composer and the performer, opened new vistas for Jewish Soul Music and a contemporary chapter in the annals of the development of the Klezmer's music - renewing its days as of old. On this development of Jewish music, says Giora Feidman, "Jewish music in its essence is my very life. In my work and search for it I had felt lonely. Rarely have I been able to find a great composer, attentive, willing and able to express in music the miracle of Israel reborn - in the footsteps of our forefathers that had borne with them a melody in their hearts - the transcendental strength that safeguarded and galvanized them in all their sufferings and peregrinations." "In the music of Issachar Miron I have found the answer, the never-failing stream I had been looking for." "The music of Issachar Miron is deeply rooted in Jewish folklore - Ashkenazi and Sephardic. It is however, never a quotation. It is a vibrant expression, wondrously suited for my personal expression and for my instrument, the clarinet. It is as a new but richly mellowed wine in an ancient vessel - the style of the Klezmer." The ensamble which accompanies Giora Feidman is comprised of Ori Harpaz, a Sabra, on the guitar, and Moshe Schprecher, a newcomer from Russia, on the string bass, Alan Bore, percussion. The ensemble is joined in 4 selections by Eugene Bianco, harp and Seymour Barab, cello.
