Dasharajna Yuddha, or the Battle of Ten Kings, is one of the earliest recorded wars in Indian history. It is described in the seventh Mandala of the Rigveda. The war was fought between King Sudas of the Bharata tribe and a confederation of ten powerful tribes. The conflict arose after Sudas replaced his royal priest Vishvamitra with Sage Vashistha. Political rivalry and control over the fertile region of Saptasindhu intensified the tensions. Despite being outnumbered, Sudas used superior strategy and terrain advantage. The decisive battle took place on the banks of the River Parushni, identified with the Ravi River. A sudden flood reportedly disrupted the coalition forces and changed the course of the war. Sudas emerged victorious, establishing the prominence of the Bharata tribe. This battle is considered foundational in shaping early Vedic political identity and the name “Bharat.”
