The pool opened in the 1962 and is part of the heritage of Portishead. It is now in great threat of closing indefinitely as it costs too much to keep it going, so the council tell us. North Somerset council are being obtuse about objectives raised by the Friends of Portishead Open Air Pool Group in ways to save it from closure. Sounds like they have machinations of selling it to developers similar to the way they bent over and took it from the developers of the marina that greatly expanded the population of Portishead and added very little in the way of infrastructure and services. I think it would be a travesty if it closed. Money is not the one criterion that can sway decisions about the future of the pool. It is worth the money to keep it open to have as a feature of the town. Unfortunately we've had two less than fair summers in a row. This has been to the advantage of the council as the obvious takings of the pool have been low which strengthens their argument. It is a shame. And I know it is a financial burden, but can't we afford it? Are we all now slaves to commerce in such a way that if something isn't making money it's not worth keeping? If this goes I can't see the council offering anything else in the way of amenities and leisure facilities.
