June is usually not a good month for deep sky astrophotography, as the nights here in central Europe are not totally dark due to the summer solstice. Nevertheless I used a period of several days with clear skies for an Astro excursion to a dark location to the so called Haarstrang in North Rhine Westphalia with good visibility of the southern sky to image Messier 16, the Eagle Nebula in the constellation of Serpens. On three days I collected enough data despite the very short nights - time between nautical twilight is only 3.5h. Bringing a complex technical system like such an Astro imaging rig out into the wild is always challenging, as many factors influence the success and the results. Is the mount properly aligned? Is the autoguiding working well? Is the camera always in focus despite changing temperatures? Will wind ruin the image? Are clouds coming? Is the resident farmer not okay with me standing on a lonely dirt road in the middle of the night? This is the reason why I prefer to use my fixed observatory in my garden, as I can eliminate most of those imponderables. My current mobile Astro imaging rig is a A&M 4.5 inch triplet APO with a TMB 115/805 lens and a carbon fibre tube. A M82 Riccardi reducer transform this superb APO into a 600 mm f5 astrograph with excellent correction and virtually no vignetting on a full format camera. I use the ASI6200MM Pro full format CMOS camera with Baader filters - probably the best cooled deep sky amateur astro camera at the moment. I put all this stuff on a Celestron CGX mount. Furthermore, I use the N.I.N.A. astro imaging suite for image capture and PHD Guiding for autoguiding. A beefy 500Wh LiPo Powerstation delivers plenty of juice to operate all this stuff for many hours.
