Lyrid meteor shower peaks tonight. We are using 'forward scattering' to detect meteors: I have tuned the Yagi Directional Antenna toward Channel 2 TV in Las Vegas, NV. There is a second Channel 2 Signal from N. Platt, NE in the same general direction. I am monitoring the carrier frequency with my software defined radio. Obviously, it is too far over the horizon for me to see a signal.... UNLESS a meteor enters the atmosphere 80km up and leaves an ionized trail of plasma. The TV signal will reflect off this trail and down to my antenna, giving me a signal on the carrier wave at 54. 31 MHz. This will show up as a bright signal on the waterfall below the red line marking the frequency. The Shower should peak around 6am, but we are getting 10-15 traces an hour now. Note, you will see occasional 'beeps' on or near the frequency due to stray signals, The meteors will be strong signals and very obvious, and right on frequency.
