Situated in a commanding position above the village of Castleton in Derbyshire, Peveril Castle was built for William Peveril just after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Visited by Henry II numerous times, and hosting King Malcolm IV of Scotland, the barony was eventually granted to John of Gaunt, who stripped the castle of its materials, marking the beginning of its decline.
