Marc Williams and Rockinghorse; 'I Shot the Sheriff' (1974). 'Popco' was a short-lived Kiwi chart-pop TV show end-of-year special for 1974. In the absence of the chart acts themselves, or even videos of them, local artists (mostly drawn from established nightclub careers) took up the slack by performing cover versions of the latest hits. He'd just turned 20 but Marc Williams was a star and the whole country knew it, even before he'd released his first single. It was another example of a local indigenous 'star' being delivered to the country via TV and finding a receptive mass audience. Williams went on to have chart hits of his own, and quickly relocated to Australia to further his career. This outstanding version of the Bob Marley standard (backed by remarkably adaptable country-rock outfit Rockinghorse) shows the Clapton version to be the dreary, dirgey limp-fest it always was. Incidentally, the MC doing the introduction was Steve Gilpin of Misex (eventually). Enjoy. Visit the NZ On Screen site for way, way more of this sort of thing...
