I’m an orthopedic oncologist in the department of orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic oncology is the care of patients with benign and malignant tumors of the soft tissues and skeleton, mostly in the limbs. A lot of patients who come to see me are anxious. They may have been told one thing by an outside physician. They may have had a worrisome radiology report. They may not really know what’s going on. So really the important thing for us is to educate the patients and make them comfortable with their diagnosis and what they’re facing. So really my first job is to make a connection with the patient so we can really allay their fears and get them ready for what’s coming, whether it be something simple or something very complex. The most rewarding part of my job is a patient connection. I deal with some patients who we can cure of cancer, and of course, that’s a great feeling. But some patients we can, and some patients are at the end of their life, and those relationships and that connection is just as meaningful.
