(burial practices and isotope analysis) At the beginning of the Viking Age, from the 8th century, new settlements appeared along the shores of the North and Baltic Seas that functioned as centers of maritime trade or emporia, for example, Ribe, Kaupang, Birka, Hedeby, Rerik and Ohus. The inhabitants of these settlements had extensive regional and interregional contacts, thanks to both independent travel and communication with merchants, missionaries and even slaves. Of the above, Ribe was the earliest major trading center in Scandinavia, dating from around 704-710 AD. It is located off the coast of southwestern Jutland, in what is now Denmark. The reconstructed map shows that the main territory of the settlement consisted of narrow rectangular sections in two rows on both sides of the street going from northwest to southeast, which was crossed by the main road of regional importance. To the east of the settlement is a cemetery with an area of ββabout 8-9 hectares, which served as a source of information about the cultural proximity and geographical origin of people buried there. #Vikings #history #MiddleAges #science #archeology -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --- Support channel: https://www.patreon.com/user/overview... -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --- Sources: Croix S, Frei KM, SindbΓ¦k SM, SΓΈvsΓΈ M (2020) Individual geographic mobility in a Viking-Age emporium β Burial practices and strontium isotope analyzes of Ribeβs earliest inhabitants.
