Speaker: Dr. Ramdas Kanissery, Associate Professor in Weed Science, UF-IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee. Summary: Weed infestations in citrus groves vary in intensity depending on the weed species, making weed management an ongoing challenge for Florida citrus growers. Weeds such as Spanish needles, Parthenium, Day Flower, Guinea grass, and Torpedo grass are particularly problematic because they spread quickly, thrive in groves, and compete with trees for essential resources. These weeds pose an even greater threat to younger groves. The key to effective weed management is addressing the problem early before it spreads. This talk will cover research-based strategies for managing these aggressive weeds, helping growers maintain long-term control and protect the health and productivity of their citrus trees.
