(16 Dec 2016) KEITH HARING-PAINTED CARS ON DISPLAY IN LOS ANGELES A new exhibit in Los Angeles assembles five vehicles painted by 1980s New York pop artist Keith Haring. The cars, motorcycle, Land Rover and more go on display starting this weekend at the Petersen Automotive Museum. "We approach the automobile as art in a number of ways," said museum curator Leslie Kendall. "The car itself can be a work of art – by the sculptural quality of its body. It can be used as a subject of art – for example, it appears in a canvas or in a photograph. Or a car can become the canvas. And for this exhibition, we are treating the car as a canvas because Keith Haring treated the car as a canvas. Haring was very, very active as most people know in the '80s – the New York pop culture scene. And he painted everything – subway drawings, he painted wood, he painted shoes, he painted jackets, T-shirts – you name it. He did it all. And he painted cars. We wanted to bring together for the first time ever a grouping of the vehicles that he painted – not just cars. We have a motorcycle too and a motorized child's vehicle." Kendall said the museum was first approached by a collector who had the Land Rover in his art collection, then sought out the other vehicles to bring them all together for the first time. Haring died in 1990 at age 31. The exhibit will be open through June.
