(7 Dec 1999) Russian/Nat Russian troops fighting in Chechnya are trying to avoid the mistakes made during the 1994 to 1996 Chechen conflict during which thousands of their own soldiers were killed. This time, the Russian Army prefers to pound the rebels from a distance in an attempt to avoid any close range combat. But despite these measures Russian hospitals are receiving a large number of battle wounded, most either shot by rebel snipers or injured by land mines. This military hospital in Mozdok, in North Ossetia, accepts all army casualties. Soldiers are treated here before being sent back to ranks or transferred for further treatment. For now, casualty figures remain hard to determine. Both the Russian and Chechen sides have claimed the opposition is suffering heavy losses while refusing to admit their own. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "It depends how bad their injuries are. They stay two or three days, sometimes more, as much as a week. The boy in the next ward has been here for three weeks due to his serious injuries. We try to evacuate them out of here as soon as possible." SUPER CAPTION: Lyudmila Antonenko, Nurse SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "There are various types of wounds and injuries that we have to deal with over here. In fact we meet the wounds of whole spectrum of field military medicine. The most common ones are limb wounds, head wounds, stomach wounds etc." SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Marchuk, Surgeon Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
