The simple melody of Agricola's 16th-century hymn 'Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ' is accompanied by a melody in the left hand that everyone immediately recognizes and takes to his or her heart. That is the phenomenal thing in this simple chorale arrangement by J. S Bach. The pedal is limited to consistent eighth-note sustain. Rudolph Garrels ORGAN Rudolph Garrels from Northern Germany was a pupil of Arp Schnitger. Check, https://garrelsorgelpurmerend.nl/de-d... Garrels designed a new instrument with a "Hamburger Prospekt” (main case, Ruckpositiv and Pedal towers), and incorporated pipes and other parts of the previous organ. The Garrels-organ still contains some 150 pipes dating back to the early 16th century. The organ was to reflect the importance of the city, for this reason, the city's coat of arms was prominently presented above the organ case. After Garrels’ death, other organ builders maintained the organ, and only a few changes were made. In 1850 the gothic church had to be torn down because it was in a bad state of repair. A new church with contemporary architecture was built in 1850-1853. Fortunately, the Garrels-organ could be reinstalled in the new building, although under an arch and somewhat less prominently visible. The dismantling in 1850 was done by organ builders Flaes & Brünjes. They installed new keyboards and couplers, a new pedalboard (the old ones are still kept in a nearby museum) and also made changes to the wind pressure and voicing. In 1971 the Protestant congregation left this church. In 1976 the organ was dismantled and stored by Flentrop after which the church was refurbished for use as a theatre and concert hall. The empty organ case remained in the building as a silent witness of the past. The function of the building changed again when the Roman Catholic parish acquired the church in 1989. They rededicated it to St. Nicholas and St. Catherine, adapting the interior of the church for the Catholic mass. The complicated history was extensively studied by the consultant Jan Jongepier during the dismantling in 1976. The organ builders FLENTROP successfully restored the organ in 2001-2002. Jongepier did research in the archives, but also on the basis of the organ parts that were stored in 1976 at the organ maker Flentrop. COMMENTS ON J. S. BACH "To strip human nature until its divine attributes are made clear, to inform ordinary activities with spiritual fervor, to give wings of eternity to that which is most ephemeral; to make divine things human and human things divine; such is Bach, the greatest and purest moment in music of all time." Pablo Casals "Bach is the beginning and end of all music." Max Reger "...the greatest Christian music in the world...if life had taken hope and faith from me, this single chorus would restore all." Felix Mendelssohn (On the "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" from Mass in B minor) "I had no idea of the historical evolution of the civilized world's music and had not realized that all modern music owes everything to Bach." Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov "Now there is music from which a man can learn something." W. A. Mozart (on hearing Bach motets in Leipzig) "Study Bach: there you will find everything." Johannes Brahms "Bach is Bach, as God is God." Hector Berlioz "O you happy sons of the North who have been reared at the bosom of Bach, how I envy you." Giuseppi Verdi "...the most stupendous miracle in all music!." Richard Wagner "Bach is a colossus of Rhodes, beneath whom all musicians pass and will continue to pass. Mozart is the most beautiful, Rossini the most brilliant, but Bach is the most comprehensive: he has said all there is to say. If all the music written since Bach's time should be lost, it could be reconstructed on the foundation which Bach laid." Charles Gounod "If one were asked to name one musician who came closest to composing without human flaw, I suppose general consensus would choose Johann Sebastian Bach..." Aaron Copland "In Bach, the vital cells of music are united as the world is in God." Gustav Mahler
