Rise to Honor, a 2004 PS2 exclusive kung fu fighting game had a very interesting, fun and satisfying melee combat system that involved using only the right analogue stick instead of buttons. I had learned about this game back in the day through a TV show called Gamer TV and when I got a PS2, this was one of the first games I played. While the smooth and stylish omnidirectional kung fu moves coupled with subtle vibration on the controller made for a very satisfying combat experience, I could not finish the game at the time, as I had gotten stuck in one of the levels and just gave up. years later, I started playing SIFU, another fantastic fighting game where I also sucked pretty bad. So I decided to go back to Rise to Honor and play this game on a PS2 emulator. Even after more than 20 years, I must say, the game still holds! I'm very happy I went back to this game and this time was able to complete it. While the combat system in its core is quite simple, since you only decide which direction you want to strike and not what kind of strike you want to perform, I believe a modern developer with modern technology and game design sensibilities should revisit this combat system and design something similar to it. I think this combat system has a lot of potential, especially when aided by the advancement the gaming industry has made since this game's release. Not only can this system enable a true omnidirectional fighting, but it can also allow buttery smooth, almost synchronized dance-like kung fu fighting that we see in the best of kung fu movies.
