This walk begins in the village of Alwinton, the last village in Upper Coquetdale, Northumberland. The route follows Clennel Street, an ancient droveway, for a short distance before heading over the River Alwin towads Camp Knowe hillfort. This univallate hillfort located on a prominent spur overlooking the river probably dates to the early Iron Age, and contains three roundhouses. The route follows the ridge to the summit of Silverton Hill, with views of the ruins of Old Rookland in the valley below. This farmstead was occupied from at least the eighteenth century possibly earlier, before being abandoned in the 1950s. A bridleway, a narrrow trail and a difficult trek across damp rough ground lead to the summit of Wether Cairn. The walk back to the start follows the opposite side of the valley of Atlerhope Burn to Kidland Forest, taking in Puncherton Hill and The Dodd before meeting the outward route near the bridge over the Alwin.
