Deborah Andrews, Professor of Design for Sustainability and Circularity - London South Bank University / CEDaCI project Karl Rabe, MD & Founder - WoodenDataCenter The Hyperscale Members of the Open Compute Foundation all share a common issue, they have almost solved their Scope 2 emissions and now they all need to to solve their Scope 3 emissions, which account for 95+ % of their total Green greenhouse gas Emissions. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for products or services become more important for all of the Data Center industry as it seeks to find ways to address Scope 3 emissionsIn our Presentation we will compare a product with identical technical properties, the Open Rack Version 3 (ORV3), from two different Suppliers one steel-based and the other bio-based. In our LCA comparison, we will create an inventory of the energy and materials required across the supply and value chain of the ORV3 and treatment at the end of life. By using a real-world example we want to give the Audience a guide on how to view their own services and products, and also give science-based insights into using wood, CLT, and Mass Plywood as an alternative for IT racks.
