Why Do We Know So Little About Viking Helmets?

While most of us (should) know that the Vikings never wore horns on their helmets, there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding what type of helmets the Vikings did actually wear as archaeologists have only uncovered 5 separate helmet fragments from which full replicas could be reproduced and even these are very much subject to artistic interpretation. In this video I'll be taking a look at the broader types of helmet that were worn during the Viking Age like the Gjermundbu Spectacle Helmet as well as the earlier Vendel Helmets like that found at Valsgärde and those from slightly later like the transition to largely conical, nasal-style helmets.
