They appear in relief on cave walls and as small amulet-sized sculptures often polished from wear. Some have been found in graves. These vulval images are the oldest known examples of representative art. The vulva is pre-eminently a symbol of birth, representing the beginnings, fertility, the gateway to life itself.” ~ When the Drummers Were Women After reading I went into a dome that I imagined as a womb and sang for all the contemplation. Layne was in my dreams the day before filming this and still feeling her presence. She often shares that, "The drum is the echo of the first sound we ever hear, our mothers blood pulsing through her arteries while we were fetuses in the womb." They get to experience Oneness with the being growing within them for 9 month. She then have an initiation of giving birth, where her baby comes through the gate way the vulva. When we celebrate our births it is also the anniversary of your mother's birthing initiation.
