Frank and Daphne are with grandson Nathan on a mountain bike day ride to Elk Lakes, British Columbia, with a short hike to the second lake before the return ride to the trailhead in Alberta. The 12 km section we rode is part of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR), a popular long-distance off-road route from Banff (Canada) to Antelope Wells (USA) on the Mexican border. This ride took place in October 2023 on a bluebird day that started off with frost on the ground at the trailhead in Peter Lougheed Park (Kananaskis) and turned into the most beautiful autumn afternoon. We enjoyed solitude and views of both lakes with hardly a ripple, except for the ones Nathan created when he bravely went swimming! Elk Lakes (Canadian Rockies) can be reached by car via a long forestry road from Highway 3 in BC, or via this restricted- access 12km forestry road/gravel route by bike or hike that starts in Alberta. Hope you enjoy the scenery and the tranquility!
