Dozens of nobles, bishops, and lords gathered in a grand hall to settle a land dispute. By the next morning, many were dead—submerged in human waste. On July 26, 1184, King Henry VI called a high-stakes meeting at Erfurt to mediate tensions between two powerful rivals. The makeshift assembly took place in the upper floor of a monastery hall built directly above a medieval latrine. When the timber supports gave way, the floor collapsed—plunging around sixty elite attendees into the cesspit below. Some suffocated. Others drowned. The king survived by clinging to a stone window. Known as the Erfurt Latrine Disaster, this grotesque tragedy rocked the Holy Roman Empire. The accident not only wiped out entire noble lineages but exposed just how fragile medieval power structures could be—literally and politically. It remains one of the most surreal and horrifying architectural failures in European history. Subscribe for more strange stories from the overlooked corners of the past.
