Wing Commander Guy Gibson, VC DSO & Bar DFC & Bar died in a crash in Steenbergen, Netherlands on 19th September 1944 (in a mission unrelated to Operation Market Garden). He is most well known however for leading the famous Dambusters raid to destroy dams in German using Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb. The crash site of his Mosquito, which he flew with Squadron Leader JB Warwick DFC as navigator, is today in an industrial estste to the north east of Steenbergen. I also visit the Dambusters Memorial Park where there is a memorail to Gibson and Warwick before heading to their burial place, side by side, at the town's Catholic cemetery. A little research indicates that the crash is a bit of a mystery. GPS info: Crash site: 51.59235,004.30699 Dambusters Memorial Park: 51.58416,004.31713 Cemetery: 51.58782,004.32801 (the graves spot)
