Turn up the volume! Weaverville Chamber of Commerce applies for National HGTV competition. HGTV, a nationwide home improvement and real estate television channel with approximately 95,628,000 viewers, launched a nationwide call to find towns that could use some of the 'Home Town' touch. It's all part of an ambitious new series -- 'Home Town Takeover'. In this exciting new project, the hosts of HGTV’s popular series Home Town, Erin and Ben, are planning to lead a team of renovation pros as they takeover and makeover an entire small town. The six-episode 'Home Town Takeover' is slated to air on HGTV in 2021. The Weaverville Chamber of Commerce, at their January 23rd Board of Directors meeting elected to apply for the HGTV 'Home Town Takeover' because entering the competition could help gain interest in revitalizing the Historic District of Weaverville. The HGTV competition seeks to “revitalize the city’s downtown while preserving and celebrating the town’s architectural treasures, endemic charm and historic features.” The Weaverville Chamber of Commerce assigned the application to a new member, Scott Watkins, who owns a small business, Buildaberg, that is within the Historic District. With two weeks to prepare an application and video submission, Scott recruited his wife Antonette to help him develop the project. The couple worked with Joel Patton at the Trinity Journal to strategize how HGTV could help improve Weaverville’s Historic district. Joel and Antonette arranged and filmed interviews with members of the community, including; Anna Leeper Carson, Molly Simmons Contos, Jill Cox, Jim French, Dana Ryan, Jean Lam and Roxanne Woodhouse. Dero Forslund provided some great footage of activities around Trinity County to help round out the application video. From the HGTV application “Our Historic District is opportune for HGTV’s Hometown takeover to bring out and showcase the historic characteristics of our beloved hometown including; several well known and loved historic homes and buildings, which are in need of repair and remodels, (Trinity Market, Garden Cafe, Stagecoach Pizza, and La Casita) a need for a parklet(s), (such as a round about or two, an open flexible space that can be used for space for farmers markets or parade events, public art, or for parking, or a new sidewalk extension that would provide more community space and amenities for the local traditional events carried out on Main St.), several underused buildings, which could be great for a mural(s), because we are proud of our rich art community, and/or, finally and last but not least, some facade improvements (fresh paint, sun awnings, and building signs) that could go a long way to revive the Weaverville Historic District.”
