3B Umpire (crew chief) Ron Kulpa ejected Chicago's Miguel Cairo for arguing warnings issued after Minnesota's Jorge Lopez hit Andrew Vaughn with a pitch to load the bases in the 9th inning of a tied game. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/... Twitter: / closecallsports Discord: / discord The warnings were issued in accordance with Official Baseball Rule 6.02(c)(9), and in response to the benches-clearing incident: "If, in the umpire’s judgment, circumstances warrant, both teams may be officially 'warned' prior to the game or at any time during the game." This is why the benches clearing is so significant to this play. If the benches didn't clear, warnings would likely not have been issued as the pitch does not appear to be a violation of the intentionally throwing at batter rule, given the situation (loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning of a tied ballgame). Instead, the warning is issued in response to the two teams' reactions in exiting their respective dugouts (and...sigh...bullpens) to argue on the field, umpires opted to issue warnings in any event, as the teams had now demonstrated animosity that rose to the level of an on-field altercation. OBR 6.02(c)(9) Comment states that arguing a warning is an ejectable offense ("team personnel may not come onto the playing surface to argue or dispute a warning issued under Rule 6.02(c)(9)").
