My Top 10 Favorite Games that Self Balance

In today's video I discuss a variety of mechanisms and approaches that help games self-balance (either during setup or during the game). Sorry about the lack of video--it was accidentally deleted, but fortunately we still had the audio! Panelists Solo Gamer (Aryn): Wyrmspan (Ravel Mode Automa) - I love Wyrmspan! Wingspan with dragons? Yes, please! The Automa Factory outdid themselves with this title! Not only did they include a traditional Automa to play with, they included a new Automa, Ravel Mode. Depending on how you are doing with your cave excavation the Automa will adjust accordingly. Such a dynamic Automa! If you like Solo games, you owe it to yourself to check it out! Heavy Gamer (Dillon): Trickerion. This does the tried and true self-balancing loop of using victory points to determine turn order, but it takes it a step further. Each round you can choose to buy a small amount of victory points, which become more expensive based on that turn order, giving the player in the lead tougher choices and throwing others players some cheap points. The turn order in this game, however, is really important. It is so important that you will usually be frustrated at the end of a round if you get just a few more points than someone else. Turn priority could be the difference between getting the master trick you've been prepping for the whole game or having to watch another magician perform it at the theatre while you're still resigned to pulling a rabbit out of a hat. This can be frustrating in a game this heavy, but you learn to play around it and pay close attention to what tricks and actions your opponents may be gearing up to perform. Digital Gamer (Kaitlyn): Ex Libris requires you to place your "books" (cards) in alphabetical order. As you go along and place more "books" down, some become impossible to place unless you can somehow move stuff over (not always doable). And you can't cheat because your neighbour does a check at the end and will flip over cards that don't follow the alphabetical order rule. Family Gamer (Skiler): Quacks of Quedlinburg- This game includes 'rat tails' that are scattered along the scoring track. At the end of each round, players who are behind the leader get benefits for how many 'rat tails' they are behind. This game is wonderful fun for those who like to push their luck and bag build. We especially love this as a family game as the joy of trying not to explode your potion is fun for both the young and old! (Recommend for ages 8+) Also Isle of Skye (Jamey) Added later: DroPolter, Incan Gold, Ra Honorable Mentions: --Adrenaline (you become more of a target) --Arkham Horror LCG (player scaling) --Cosmic Encounter (player participation) --Galaxy Trucker (players in front take more damage) --Heat (you choose when you use your catchup cards) --Hegemony (votes, interconnected) --Legacy of Yu, Mind MGMT (gets easier/harder as you lose/win) --Nations (personal difficulty levers) --Pandemic Legacy (win/lose benefits) --Root (player keep each other in check due to VP visibility) --Tokaido (taking multiple actions) My Top 6: 6. Mario Kart (benefits in the back are better) 5. Dominion (VP cards clog your deck) 4. Power Grid (lagging players get cheaper/first choice to buy) 3. Century Spice Road (token placement to get to cards you want) 2. Tapestry (first-to-income bonuses) 1. The Gang (bonuses/penalties) 00:00 - Introduction 01:14 - Panelists (Top 7-10) 08:55 - Top 6 Balance Is Boring:    • Balance Is Boring   Catch-Up Mechanisms:    • Catch-Up Mechanisms in Tabletop Games   Difficulty Scaling:    • Difficulty Scaling in Cooperative Games   Become a champion of this channel: https://stonemaier-games.myshopify.co... podcast link: https://stonemaiergames.com/about/pod...
