Writing a paper can be a big challenge. It’s best to give yourself as much time as possible to work on them. But sometimes, last minute papers are unavoidable. So how do you finish a paper in a weekend or a night? Keep in mind that papers improve every time you revise a draft. So handing in an early draft is not the best solution, even if you are low on time. Let’s look at two scenarios. First, if you’ve already done some writing, any amount of revision should improve your grade. And the first step of the revising process is to read what you’ve written. As you read your writing, ask yourself questions. They can be clarifying questions, like “Does this sentence make sense?” or “Would someone who doesn’t know my topic understand this paragraph?” Or they can be more conceptual, like “Does this paragraph help make my overall point?” You might notice yourself starting to skim as you read. Try to avoid skimming, and read more actively. Reading out loud can help because you will catch more grammatical errors and hear how well your thoughts are organized. In a second scenario, if you haven’t done any writing at all, try this. Start by free writing for a set amount of time, like thirty minutes. Free writing means writing all the thoughts in your head without stopping, even if they are disorganized and incomplete. You can’t revise a blank page, so write something down, even if it’s imperfect. Once your thoughts are on paper, read your work. As in the first scenario, try to read your work actively. Read it aloud. Underline the good points, and cut bad writing. Even if you have very little time, actively reading and revising your work in this way will improve the quality of your paper. It’s easy for professors to spot first drafts turned in as final papers, and it’s also easy for professors to spot papers that have gone through at least some revision. Remember: Being a good student doesn’t mean that you never have to cram. Rather, being a good student means having a plan whenever you sit down to study or write. Even if you’re short on time, you can still make a plan. And next time, schedule tasks for drafting and revising your paper well in advance. This way, you should have enough time to write without the pressure of a looming deadline. How do you handle writing papers when you’re short on time? Tell us in a comment below.
