This 1943 Harley-Davidson WLA with sidecar has undergone a full nut-and-bolt restoration to a high standard approximately five years ago. Representing the 42nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Unit, also known as Patton’s Ghosts, the motorcycle is finished in authentic World War II livery and remains in excellent condition, having been driven only about 10 kilometers since restoration. The restoration focused on preserving originality while ensuring long-term reliability. Every component was disassembled, cleaned, and refinished, with all major internals replaced using original Harley-Davidson parts sourced from the United States. The engine was rebuilt, a modern diaphragm clutch and electronic ignition system were added, and the fuel tank was internally sealed. The speedometer retains its original number blade and was professionally overhauled. The wiring harness is entirely new, but the electrical system remains 6 volts. All visible key components, including the frame, engine casings, wheels, handlebar, carburetor, regulator, lights, filters, and seats, are original Harley-Davidson parts. The seat shows minor wear consistent with age, adding to the vehicle’s character. Reproductions were used only where original components were unavailable, such as for the battery tray, ammunition box brackets, and scabbard mounts. The sidecar is believed to be a replica of the L29 Goulding model, manufactured by ClassicSidecar.com. It was restored in parallel with the motorcycle and finished to match the vehicle’s wartime appearance. The canvas top is a high-quality reproduction, and the overall fit and finish are consistent with the rest of the restoration. The restoration is thoroughly documented with approximately 100 photographs and reflects a no-expense-spared approach. Engine number 42WLA43022 matches both cylinders.
