In June 2022, four of us from Alaska and one from Colorado traveled to Maun Botswana, to go on a mini expedition kayaking trip across the Okavango Delta with outfitter John Sandenberg of Kayaktive Adventure Safaris. We spent 10 days kayaking about 200 miles across the entire delta from Sepopa, in the panhandle, to Maun, at the bottom of the delta. Three other fellows from South Africa joined the trip. This was not an easy trip, and it can only be conducted during the high water months of May through August. The first three days of the trip we had fairly long days of paddling in fast, deep channels in the panhandle. After that we struggled through blockages and pushed our support boats through shallow lagoons. In remote parts of the delta we were fortunate to see the rare Sitatunga antelope. We started to see lots more wildlife as we got farther down the delta into the grazing lands. We eventually ran out of time and had to motor out the last 60 miles. When time allowed we were able to go on nature walks. Overall, we saw lots of wildlife including elephants in camp some night and lions roaring all night long. I look forward to returning some day to paddle these last 60 miles.
