At this dinner, Omega, who (as most will know) built the watches used by the Apollo astronauts on their travels, presented 26 gold Speedmasters to the astronaut corps, each engraved with the name of an astronaut — as well as the missions he had flown. These would be the first commemorative Speedmasters made to celebrate man’s attempts to conquer the stars. All in all, Omega produces roughly 1000 ref.BA145.022 Speedys, most of which were sold to the public (with an altered caseback engraving). 50 years later, Omega celebrated that watch, as well as the lunar surface landing that inspired it, with the release of a new Speedmaster. A fitting tribute, produced in an edition of 1,014, this up-to-date Speedmaster brings modern updates to the iconic model, including the Cal. 3861 Master Co-Axial movement, an 18k Moonshine gold case and bracelet, exhibition caseback, and a burgundy ceramic bezel. The onyx markers remain and help to set this Speedy apart.
