This time I finish off the I AM WHAT I AM carving and then talk about how to prepare and carry out filled lettering. I promised I would pass on some details of courses and online resources. I'm based in the UK so these are are UK centred, but there is still a lot to see and learn from wherever you are. There is some dubious advice on letter carving online but if you use the links below you should find good people who will help put you on the right track. If you are based outside the UK and know of good courses in your region, let me know in the comments below. I learned letter carving from JOHN NEILSON near Oswestry in Wales. He runs a fantastic 5 day course every summer, and his web site lists some other good places to look for courses. John Neilson: https://jneilson.co.uk/courses/ Personally I have no background in calligraphy, a subject which cam make a really good base for the lettering you design and carve. A great organisation which brings calligraphers, letter carvers and other lettering professionals together is LETTER EXCHANGE Their shop has back copies of their twice-yearly journal called FORUM, well worth getting those copies, they are full of great material. https://letterexchange.org/ Another organisation which you should check out is the LETTERING ARTS TRUST https://www.letteringartstrust.org.uk/ They help connect people looking for a hand carved headstone or memorial with artists who can carry out commissions. They also have an online shop and provide grants to help people starting their letter carving careers. Anyone who features on the trust's site is worth looking at and learning from. While we're here on Youtube, I should mention the lettering of TOM KEMP. I believe he is mainly a potter these days but he has a set of videos showing him hand painting Roman capitals. The best Roman lettering was first painted using a flat brush, those outlines could then be carved with a hammer and chisel. If you're not sure that a brushed letter could be accurate enough for the best carved lettering, just watch Tom at work. • The alphabet Instagram I'm not a big user of Instagram but there is a thriving community of letter carvers there. Have a look at some of the people I follow. / poorfrankraw These days I'm sure most people get most of their information online, but I'll mention just one book. TOM PERKINS' book on letters and letter carving is very good. If you only get one book on letter carving, get this: https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/art-o... FILLED LETTERING I use this resin, and this is a link to my supplier. Jolly resin is made in Italy so should be available across Europe and possibly in the US too: https://pureadhesion.co.uk/jolly-natu...
