The Browning Automatic Rifle (or BAR) is a family of American automatic rifles and machine guns utilised by many allied nations during the 20th century. The primary variant of use, the M1918, was chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge and was designed by John Browning. The weapon was initially manufactured as a replacement to the previously issued Chauchat and M1909 Benét–Mercié machine guns utilised by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. The BAR was designed to be carried by infantrymen, while supported by an over-the-shoulder sling, or to be fired from the hip. However, in practise, the US army would see to using the BAR as a light machine gun, often firing the weapon from a bipod that would be introduced to models after 1938. While the weapon would see action during the First World War, it would not be formally adopted as standard issue by the US Army until 1938. It would see extensive use in both World War II and the Korean War as a light machine gun, as well as serving limited time in the Vietnam War, before it would begin to be phased out in the 1950s.
