American agricultural exports to China, once vital to the rural economy, have plummeted to levels not seen in decades. It has been stated many times that port fees and equipment tariffs hurt both sides. Sorghum, soy, wheat, dairy, pork. Several categories of exports have virtually disappeared. Food remains in the warehouses, but trade is collapsing. It all started slowly. A cancelled shipment, a postponed contract. Then came the numbers. In January and February of this year, American sorghum exports to China totaled just seventy-eight thousand tons. This represents a drop of ninety-five percent compared to the same period last year, when the number exceeded one million four hundred thousand tons. Sorghum is just the first sign. Soybean exports from the United States, which led the animal feed market in China, have virtually come to a halt. Former Chinese buyers now do business with Brazil. Brazilian ports are congested with so much soy being shipped. Shipping costs have gone up a lot. Even with this extra cost, the Chinese prefer not to buy from the United States. The causes lie in tariffs, political disputes and calculated commercial distancing. The Donald Trump administration has raised tariffs on Chinese goods to as much as one hundred and forty-five percent. China responded aggressively. It imposed tariffs of one hundred and twenty-five percent on all American agricultural products. Chinese authorities explained that this was not just retaliation, but a permanent change in the origin of the products. #economy #unitedstates #china #tariffs #import #agricultural #geopolitics #trump #usa #donaldtrump #xijinping #export
