Goulet first gained international attention playing guitar in Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love" video. She has a stunning five octave range that is as versatile as it is powerful. On her eponymous album, produced by Detroit TV host and record producer Jim White, she had the oppertunity to show off her rare gifts. Goulet was a session singer until she was discovered and signed by the head of Island Records, Chris Blackwell. She only ever released one eponymous album before she was dropped by the label and returned to session work. Goulet is one of eight children and always wanted a career in singing when she was five years old. Her mother always wanted Goulet to be a singer, she really pushed her into it full force and gave her the confidence while her father kept her feet on the ground. Goulet lives in Dearborn, Michigan but grew up in Detroit, so it's not all suprising that she took an interest in soul music. She was originally influenced by Barbara Streisand but as she grew up she found out that Streisand wasn't the only singer in the world. Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Patti Labelle, and Minnie Riperton had a major impact on her work. Infact she learned her range from Riperton. Goulet was 26-year-old when she recorded her eponymous album. The LP has an intriguing version of Aretha Franklin's standard, "{You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," another excelent remake is the lead single "Stop & Think," originaly released in 1983 by The Ritchie Family - The song appeared in the episode Baby Blues of Miami Vice. Goulet astonishing range gets a full workout on the breezy "I'm In Love," the second single of the album. There's even material on the album produced by American R&B/jazz fusion singer, arranger, musician, composer, conductor, Dexter Wansell with the legendary Cynthia Biggs on background vocals to name a few that participated on the album. Unfortunatly the album didn't receive widespread promotion and got lost in the shuffle. Goulet was dropped from her label and returned to session work. Goulet performed in a number of local bands, but she received the most recognition for her tenure with Colours. The group consisted of Mel Ball (Bandleader, Composer/Lyrists), Joanne Roach (Lead Vocalist), Jose’ Carretero (Piano, Keyboards, Synth), Darrell Campbell (Lead Vocalist/Guitarist), Andre Delano (Lead Vocalist), Dominic Lombardi (Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Soprano and Flute), Loyce Joshua (Drums and percussion), Jackie Gillard (Vocals), Hubie Crawford who was Earl Klugh’s bassist for 7 years (Bass and Harmonica), and Michelle Goulet (Lead Vocals). Fun fact! Bill Clinton played tenor sax with the band. Michelle Goulet is a excelent singer sad the album was never reissued on CD (hint labels!)
